I know what it’s like to be dragging through the morning, feeling foggy and having to have a shot of espresso in order to be able to function and get to work. It’s not fun. I used to have to rely on coffee, and often felt so exhausted I couldn’t even hold up my hair dryer to do my hair in the morning. A lot of that was due to my low thyroid condition and anemia. So I had to be proactive and decided I was tired of being sick and tired all the time. I learned about adaptogens and life got a WHOLE LOT BETTER!
What the heck are Adaptogens?
Adaptogens are a classification of herbs or plant medicines that have particular properties that help the cellular function of your adrenals and immune system. Essentially they help us adapt to stress. They nourish our organ’s, blood, tissues and whole body by supporting essential functions that keep us strong and energized.
How is your vitality for the most part? Are you often tired? Do you lack the stamina to keep going all day long? Do you often get sick with colds and flus that last more than 2 days? Having a hard time sleeping, gaining weight for no apparent reason and just feeling like your getting older a lot faster? These are signs you are depleted and you need to take note. Fatigue is insidious. One day becomes two and then a week and then months and years. Long standing chronic fatigue leads to chronic illness and disease. And long standing stress is often the main culprit to our longevity and quality of life.
Ashwaganda saves the day!
It is the Indian Ginseng and often regarded as the “strength of the stallion” because it powerfully restores a weak or debilitated state. It has traditionally been used to enhance and support the following:
- Thyroid and Metabolism
- Builds the blood thereby healing anemic and debilitated states
- Strengthens the Immune system, which means less colds and flus
- Builds your white T cells helping you prevent diseases like cancer
- Supports the brain and mental functions so memory and focus is enhanced
- VITALITY , helps you run longer, complete all your errands, work your day and take care of your family so you don’t crash by 3pm
- Anxiety and nervous tension is reduced and you receive a natural relaxation response similar to a depressant (like alcohol) without the side effects
- Helps reduce insomnia and gives you deeper more restorative sleep
- Helps lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind so you prevent heart and cardiac disease
It’s one of the best herbs around! Regular ginseng is a very powerful herb as well, but it can be a bit too stimulating for some people. If you find that you are sensitive and ginseng is keeping you up at night, or causing heart palpitations or increases your blood pressure, the best alternative is Ashwaganda. I sometimes see this in my sensitive clients and I then put them on Ashwaganda and BOOM it works beautifully.
Supplements, protocols and how to take Ashwaganda
I recommend you see a health professional like myself in order to receive the best advice and game plan for supplementing. Here are some basic tips and guidelines to get you started:
Ashwaganda comes in dry form either loose or in capsules. In liquid tinctures based in alcohol. Or it can be made into a tea by cooking the root form on low heat for a hour. I most often suggest the liquid tincture because it’s the easiest to take and also most absorbable form. It is best to be taken on empty stomach and 2-3 times per day.
Like any other medicinal plant or herb, it should be taken in combo with synergistic herbs and those that are indicated for you. I often include Licorice as it helps the palatablity, BUT not in all cases. It depends on other health issues concerning the client. So again, it’s best you consult me before you begin any herbal protocol for your health concerns.
